Attached image is the response I got from 4chan when I asked them this question. I've fucking had it with that place. I'm hoping you guys can be more civil, and maybe even helpful.

I bought a Gateway MT3422 laptop. I'm trying to install XP on it instead of Vista, to try to improve performance (it's not nearly powerful enough to run Vista well).

I format the hard drive and install like normal. All the system files seem to copy over fine (except for one .dll file related to IE, which I plan to uninstall anyway), but after it restarts to do the setup portion of the install process, I get an error about "Insufficient System Resources Exist to Complete the API", and the computer reboots, continuing to do so every time in an endless loop.

I tried reformatting, this time using the full format option (rather that quick format), but it still does it.

Any ideas about what to do?

Wild guess something is fishy with the hardware, possibly the memory? Start by getting memtest86+
http://www.memtest.org/ to verify that. But do post images.

/tech/ isn't your support hotline either. Now wipe your own arse for a change.

I can't be of much help, except to say "I tried the same thing".

I could not find drivers for my HP, and ended up installing a cracked version of Vista Ultimate.

After a couple months of use, it's not that bad. (Not that good either.)

Honestly, If I could help you I would.

Maybe you could try a warez Vista install, or get used to Linux?

If all you're going to post are questions we shouldn't have to answer then great, stay out.

The spam in /g/ isn't as bad as it used to be since the system32 meme, but if you aren't going to contribute to a place that never promised you anything, asking for something is not harmless.

Thank you for bumping this extremely important two-week old thread. Now we all get to see it some more. Good job.

Yeah, I realize that complaining about a thread that is "only" two weeks old on this board might seem silly. Bumping crap like this still doesn't help though.

And this is an imageboard after all. I'll start doing my part to get some decent threads going now...

Wild guess, the laptop has a SATA controller with a buggy (P)ATA mode--XP expects a pre-2002 IDE controller to be present. Not something you usually think about lacking drivers for, but XP is six years old now.

There are workarounds...check for a firmware update for your controller that fixes the ATA "emulation" mode. Barring that, you'll need a floppy drive or a copy of XP, a blank CD, free software called "nlite", and your SATA controller's XP drivers.

I've undergone the same process on a new Dell laptop that was unavailable with XP preinstalled (I'm a linuxfag who's married to Autocad, and Vista does not play well with virtualization).

Also, not your personal support, etc.
