I felt soooo sorry for the tech who had to go out and replace their system and carry that one back.

Why is this place so dead?

>> No.3

I'm using a DVI to VGA adapter and my CRT monitor does only show a refreshing rate of 60Hz.

I tried to config my xorg.conf and Linux shows a 1024@85Hz mode I can switch to but the monitor still stays on 60Hz.

How do I config my "DVI to VGA" right, so Linux doesn't think I'm using a TFT?

Pic is my monitor. It's a 17-inch yakumo.

Wow. Up until OS X beta, the Mac default appearance was an eyesore. Jesus, those colours give me a headache. Then they both look pretty much par, except Vista has a few more advanced compositing tricks for people with decent hardware.

Why do people whine over which environment looks nicer again?

So, Apple has made a vague reference to a "product transition" that will occur before the end of September.

What do you suppose it is? xMac?

Its a small lower power POWER based portable device. Looks very nice.

mid range tower?

thatd be dope, similar to mac mini specs but with room to easily install hard drives, graphics cards, ram, optical drives, pci cards. in a nice apple designed case.

They would also supply a disk with a large amount of drivers for various products.

When the Apple tech reps came to campus in March, they were pretty clear that the "G" processors were not to be spoken of. I did find it interesting that they didn't say "PPC" or "Power." That said, we haven't seen any recent offerings from IBM that look any more suitable for desktops than the G5s were, and the Cell is still unsuitable for much more than gaming, Yellow Fail Linux notwithstanding.

"Things have been going quite well recently at the LHC, with cooldown beginning now for the last two sectors of the ring, three sectors cool, and three cooling. The latest cooldown schedule is here: http://foraz.web.cern.ch/foraz/schedule.pdf , a report yesterday on progress here: http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/icc/icc2008-06/claudet.pdf. Sometime in July the beam commissioning process should begin, with the current plan to inject first particles in late July. About 2 months should be needed to get to first collisions at 10 TeV and the possibility of starting to take some data. The LHC has to have a winter shutdown so that the residents of Geneva don’t freeze to death, and that will start in late November."
