Been thinking about hooking up with a new console...

Though not sure what I should go with, i'm leaning towards a PS3, just due to the fact it has armoured core 4 on it <3

But, I'll most likely be buying it off a hong-kong wholesaler, and yeah the PS range has been known for breaking down and whatnot..

I've been told that FFXIII will not be a PS exclusive, but well, theres still suikoden, and yeah, armoured core+suikoden is almost enough to entice me into buying.

Add to the fact that online play is free on the PS3 (gotta supply your own line, but eh) its more expensive, but the line of games on it seem to be quite enticing.

With that said, does anyone know about the pal/ntsc compatability of the machine, and what about about region controls ect?

Are sony still persuing their bastardry of not making a worldwide system, or am I cool with just buying the HK version even though I live in a PAL country?

>> No.2

Fuckin' mr. indecisive strikes back.

>> No.3

Fuck it, fine IAM going to get a PS3...
Happy?

Anyways, main question is region bullshit and NTSC/Pal compatability

>> No.4

AC4 got released on the 360 as well. Sony lost the exclusive to it.

>> No.5

I own both. And as a destestable Nintendo fanboy I hold no biased torch toward either of these systems: but when push comes to shove I have to reccomend the 360. I don't even play online at all and I have to say it has a better price and better games.

Both the ps3 and the xbox have their share of technical flaws so either way you're screwed on that. Just don't keep it on your rug and the red ring of death shouldn't be a problem, and even then Nyko makes an external cooler.

PS: AC4 is awesome.

I'm no techy, but I gotta say, an OS which takes up most of your resources is pretty sucky...

Same thing happened with XP, oh wow, new...
Its got bugger all new functionality, and it takes up 5 times as much in resources, a true masterpiece! >.>

Then again, I guess with a lot of tweaking and testing, you could get it to work quite well, but as I said, techy be not I so, tend to just run things straight out of the box...

That said... If you guys dont like women with tits, send em my way =D

Ya do know Vista is programmed to use unused resources for things such as prefetch? Unlike XP which is programmed to keep as much resources free as possible, Vista is set up so that unused resources are considered wasted resources, so find ways to put things in there that are predicted to be used in the near future, cutting down on later load time. It's actually what makes Vista a bit more of a risk for Microsoft, it's a different kind of memory use architecture than everything else they've made.

>> No.14

>>13
Well that totally explains the 2-gigabyte memory requirement. Wait, NO IT DOESN'T.

>> No.15

Where do people get the "2 gigs memory" requirement from? It has 512 required, 1 gig recommended.

>> No.16

>>15
Practical requirement. VistAIDS with the laughable minimum requirement takes well past five minutes to boot.

>> No.17

A coworker runs it with minimal trouble at 500megs of ram(do not ask me how he has that much ram. I think it has something to do with shared ram on his laptop), and roommate runs it on 1 gig without a hitch. Yes it's going to have some higher requirement than XP, though also look at the release date of XP. Oct 25th, 2001, that's what, 6 years old? Think of the difference in system requirement from Windows 98 to XP. If you look at the Hardware requirement change from 98 to XP then from XP to Vista, the jump from XP to Vista is alot more minimal than 98 to XP. As things get newer, they often will come to take better hardware to run, despite what apparently you seem to believe.

Just guessing -- it's a doodad that the phone companies used to hang off nearly every circuit, that responds to certain tones back down the line so that the circuit's physical integrity can be verified over a long distance without sending a technician over. Likely handy in e.g. rural USia.

Also likely to fuck over DSL transmissions, if the test signal and response signal sit on the same bands as A/S/G/whateverDSL goes over.

What I don't get is why they epoxied it over, especially half-assed like that. It's pretty clear there's a fuse in there, a rather big diode, a couple of caps, some resistors and a custom IC.

agreed, seriously though decide what you want it for and what specs you'll need, research prices, and if then you cant decide between product x or y for whatever part its for, maybe then come and ask
its no point throwing out a figure and then expect someone to tell you what you want
you can pick up a cheap setup from a department store for under $1k

Gimme UNIX/LINUX any day. Windows automates the BOFH process, letting users blame the "darn computer" instead of fear me, the Sysop, as they ought.

LOL WTF R U DOIN?
UNIX/LINUX, in one variant or another, kinda', I dunno... runs almost all your internet infrastructure.

Which explains UNIX Asshole Syndrome. The people who deal with it are steeped in technical knowledge, and thus by and large expect everyone else to be. This is why more user-friendly interfaces to the hardware became more widespread, despite basically sucking more shit than a shopvac in an overflowing bathroom.

Not trying to troll, but yeah, we're pouring performance out of our systems running sloppily-coded OSes. But by and large we get more done, because the learning curve doesn't resemble Everest.

>> No.10

Linux users look down on everyone else for incompetence and everyone else looks down on Linux users for being such dorks. Its the way it was meant to be.

That said, yes, XP and vista are bloated and inefficient, but they are also easy, automated and do everything the average person wants. Personally, I have a Linux computer (using it as I type this) and a windows box (use it for videogames)

Could I get the games to run on linux? yeah, some of them. In fact, I have been playing Deus Ex and a few others with wine, but windows does its job, so why even bother? (Plus my windows computer has a 512mb ATI x900 series GPU, this one has a radeon x-press 1250. You know how ATI's linux drivers are :/ )

An expensive device like that you figure they would run some ultra stable and almost instant on embedded OS that can run from flash like QNX or windriver VX works.
I find it very disturbing a piece of test equipment something you would expect to work like a toaster and not catch viruses or require OS updates would have a rather fragile windows based OS like that.

I just got one of these things for $1 at a flea market. It actually works pretty well as a wireless sensor detector of sorts, but the range sucks, only working to about 20 feet. Is there some way to boost the antenna with some sort of addon for this so that it'll operate at a much farther distance?

The trip sensor on the device is infrared, but then it sends a radio signal towards the main unit. It's that radio signal that I want to boost so that it'll have a longer range. Here's a manual of the thing describing it in more detail.
