I strongly dislike max with a passion

>> No.5

What do you use? I don't like it much either.

>> No.6

I use Maya 8.5, though Maya 7 is nice too. Stay away from 8.0 though.

There are some super cool things in max... but there is just not enough to make me like it (ie.. paint weights tool <3 )

Of all the 3d modelers I've tried, I like wings3d best. But that's not saying much really.

I don't like max either, due to an obsession with mystery icons. Some UI experts claim that such icons are useful to maximize screen real-estate in sovereign applications, but I believe people who think like that are stuck in a 640x480 stone-age mindset. Icons are no substitute for text.

Max looks like it has improved a lot since I last used it though. Does it still eat RAM for breakfast?

Agreed, icons are no substitute for text, especially with these 3d apps, which have so many commands it's rediculous. Honestly, I think max's UI has stayed pretty much the same, and yes, it does eat ram, but they've suprisingly managed to keep it from becoming overly bloated. I actually disable a lot of things in it that I don't use often at all, and don't make it a point to use the tools I know are broken. I guess it's one of those "well, why would you take that much time to learn that much if the program is crappy to start with?" I think it's a case of not what program you use, but what you can do with it.

As far as modeling goes, Modo blows everything else out of the water. For everything else, I prefer XSI.

It's 2008 now, you should be having RAM for breakfast.
