I strongly dislike max with a passion

>> No.5

What do you use? I don't like it much either.

>> No.6

I use Maya 8.5, though Maya 7 is nice too. Stay away from 8.0 though.

There are some super cool things in max... but there is just not enough to make me like it (ie.. paint weights tool <3 )

>> No.7

Of all the 3d modelers I've tried, I like wings3d best. But that's not saying much really.

>> No.8

I don't like max either, due to an obsession with mystery icons. Some UI experts claim that such icons are useful to maximize screen real-estate in sovereign applications, but I believe people who think like that are stuck in a 640x480 stone-age mindset. Icons are no substitute for text.

Max looks like it has improved a lot since I last used it though. Does it still eat RAM for breakfast?

>> No.9

Agreed, icons are no substitute for text, especially with these 3d apps, which have so many commands it's rediculous. Honestly, I think max's UI has stayed pretty much the same, and yes, it does eat ram, but they've suprisingly managed to keep it from becoming overly bloated. I actually disable a lot of things in it that I don't use often at all, and don't make it a point to use the tools I know are broken. I guess it's one of those "well, why would you take that much time to learn that much if the program is crappy to start with?" I think it's a case of not what program you use, but what you can do with it.

>> No.10

As far as modeling goes, Modo blows everything else out of the water. For everything else, I prefer XSI.

It's 2008 now, you should be having RAM for breakfast.

hey /cg/ I recently completed a course on graphics in openGL using MS Visual Studios C++ an I'm looking to get more into graphics.
Where should I start? I've downloaded Blender since it was free, what kind of projects should I do to expand my graphics knowledge and get better???

>> No.2

I think the answer is: play around.

>> No.3

If you like blender, you should consider Python. I find both amusing.

I've been playing with 1D totalistic cellular automata and found some of them quite beautiful. I don't know if anyone else likes this kind of thing, but thought I'd post them.

I drunkenly bought "A New Kind of Science" on Amazon one night. Man, that book is pointless apart from the pretty pictures.

Now everything looks too real and shiny. The real world has smudges and surface unevenness and dust.

Sometimes it makes me wonder whether the japanese are correct in that the appearance of the real world is not something that is worth aspiring to replicate.

>> No.3

I thought the Japanese aspired at all times to see and appreciate the beauty of nature. To live with it. Either you are referring to the more modern, industrial Japanese population and society, the japanese artists who prefer anime over reality, or somehow I'm mistaken.

>> No.4

>>3
I was referring to animu, yes. Should've been more explicit. Though to be honest, I haven't seen the same sort of obsessive superficial realism in japanese art as I have in the west... though again this may be due to my equally superficial knowledge of the former.

Is there any tutorial to make a 3D girl like that ? I mean with that kind of face which looks like in most of japanese 3D games.

>> No.6

>>5
I imagine you'd have to first learn to draw a manga face, then to do 3D modeling and then combine the two. Or I suppose having someone do the concept sketches for you would work too. It's tough going trying to model something without a sketch first.

But yeah, I've seen tutorials on how to make a face in wings3d or some other subdivision (winged-edge) modeling program. Can't remember where though. Might want to google for mirai/wings3d user forums.

looks like a Poser render from a few years back. think it might be by an artist who goes by Yamato. try renderosity and find his gallery. nearly 100% certain the character is his, but not about the render.
